Step by Step Design of a Cascaded H-Bridge Multi-Level Converter

Farzad Golshan received his B.S. degree in Electronics Engineering from the University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran; and his
M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electronics Engineering from the Iran University of Science and Technology, Tehran, Iran. His current research interests include multi-level converters, modulation techniques, and motor drives. He is currently the manager of R&D department in Borna Electronics Company.
 
Abstract. Nowadays, multilevel converters are widely used in high-power medium-voltage applications such as motor drives, distributed generation systems, photovoltaic systems, etc. Better waveform quality of output voltage, reduced dV/dt, better electromagnetic capability, and lower switching losses are the most attractive features of multilevel converters compared with the traditional two-level converters. Three conventional types of multilevel converters are reported in previous literature: diode-clamped, capacitor-clamped and cascaded H-bridge converter.
The objective of this presentation is to provide an overview on designing an industrial Cascaded H-Bridge Multi-Level Converter, including challenges of product design, technical and manufacturing problems, and limitations of construction.
